Our next Mobilize Center Seminar is scheduled for Thursday, March 2, and features Jennifer S. Lee a clinical investigator in the Department of Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine. We look forward to seeing you!

TITLE: Overview of Current VA EHR Data Efforts

WHEN: Thursday, March 2, noon - 1 pm

WHERE: Y2E2 300, Stanford University

Abstract:
Veterans Affairs (VA) electronic health records (EHR) is the longest running and one of the largest such EHR data collections, dating as far back as the 1990s.
This overview will introduce some examples of ongoing VA data research activities, including the Million Veteran Program and Cooperative Studies Program, that extend from Palo Alto VA/Stanford to the national level.

It will also provide information for a new training program, BD-STEP (Big Data Scientist Training and Enhancement Program), a U.S. interagency collaborative between VA and National Cancer Institute.

Bio:
Jennifer S. Lee, MD, PhD, is a clinical investigator, specifically a endocrinologist in the clinic and epidemiologist by training. She is Associate Professor of Medicine, and by courtesy, of Health Research & Policy, at Stanford School of Medicine. She is Chief Medical Officer at the Palo Alto VA Cooperative Studies Program Coordinating Center (CSPCC), one of a handful of CCs nationwide that provide infrastructure to multi-site clinical trials conducted in the VA health care system. The CSP funds clinical research including large observational and multi-site interventional studies in the VA. As CMO, Dr. Lee provides clinical and research input at the various stages of a trial — from study question to execution. Dr. Lee’s research program has focused on identifying the roles of circulating sex hormones, their interactions with genetic and other factors, and risks of major complex conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, fractures, and endocrine-related cancers, in longitudinal based research cohorts such as the Women’s Health Initiative, Cardiovascular Health Study, and Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation. She is co-site lead at VA Palo Alto for the BD-STEP training program. She is an investigator in the Million Veteran Program beta study of the genetic epidemiology of cardiometabolic diseases. More recently, she is also focusing on the re-use of EHR data for research and clinical operations purposes. She is interested in integrating clinical research design/conduct into healthcare systems, by applying and developing innovative, adaptive, and feasible designs and methodology.
