*Webinar: Predictive Simulations to Study the Plantarflexors in Gait Pathologies* *Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 10:00am Pacific Daylight Time*The ankle plantarflexor muscles play an important role in human walking. Deficits in these muscles, such as weakness and contracture, occur commonly in gait pathologies. In this webinar, Carmichael Ong from Stanford University will describe a framework for predictive simulations that produces realistic motions of walking at different speeds *de novo*, and discuss how plantarflexor weakness and contracture can be modeled within such a framework. The framework and workflow developed for this study can be extended to study other mechanisms of gait pathologies. He is an expert in experimental ultrasound imaging methods to generate in vivo measures of muscle strains, and surface or intramuscular electromyography. He has experience using these techniques to determine model inputs and validate simulation results. * Dimitar Stanev is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Patras in Greece. His research focuses on methods development to handle muscle redundancy in modeling and simulation and also on knee modeling with application to osteoarthritis, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and total knee replacement. Congratulations to all the winners! *Force-Based Spasticity Model Explains Muscle Activity during Passive Stretches and Gait in Children with Cerebral Palsy* Antoine Falisse and colleagues at KU Leuven in Belgium have developed and evaluated three different feedback models to investigate the mechanisms underlying the muscle spasticity often observed in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Falisse, et al. used the models to estimate the response of spastic hamstrings and gastrocnemii in children with CP to fast passive stretches and during gait, and found that estimates based on their force-based model better matched experimental results than estimates based on their velocity- and acceleration-based models. *Apply for the NCSRR/OpenSim Visiting Scholars Program* *Summer 2019 at the National Center for Simulation in Rehabilitation Research, Stanford University* The National Center for Simulation in Rehabilitation Research (NCSRR) based at Stanford University is now accepting applications for the 2019 Visiting Scholars Program. The program is a unique experience that fosters expertise and collaborations in biomechanical simulations for rehabilitation research. Up to four individuals will be chosen to visit the NCSRR at Stanford University for a period of five weeks during the summer of 2019, from approximately June 24 to July 26. Each visiting scholar will be reimbursed for their travel and living expenses up to $8,000. During their visits, awardees will receive training and mentoring to help them reach their research goals. They will have the opportunity to participate in formal meetings, discussions with OpenSim experts, and brainstorming sessions with their fellow visiting scholars to advance their research and the OpenSim project. Through the Visiting Scholars Program, we seek to attract energetic and talented scholars from computer science, biomechanics, physical therapy and other fields to become experts in biomechanical simulation and the needs of the rehabilitation community. Webinar: SimCP: A Simulation Platform to Predict Gait Performance Following Orthopedic Interventions in Children with Cerebral Palsy September 13, 2018 at 10am Pacific Daylight Time Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have complex musculoskeletal pathologies, which are commonly corrected using orthopedic surgeries. To aid the surgical treatment planning process, Ilse Jonkers, Friedl De Groote, and colleagues have developed the SimCP simulation platform to model how clinical interventions will affect the ability of a patient to perform a typical gait pattern. The platform uses individualized musculoskeletal models and muscle synergies to personalize the simulation. Based on the OpenSim platform, this challenge is one of eight selected to be part of the Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) 2018 Competition Track. Participants are provided with a physiologically based human musculoskeletal model, the OpenSim simulation environment, and datasets of normal gait kinematics. The goal is to match the requested velocity vector, which changes in real time. Round 1 of the challenge ends on September 15. In this webinar, Łukasz Kidziński from Stanford University will introduce reinforcement learning and its application to developing control strategies. Learn more and apply<http://opensim.stanford.edu/support/pilot.html> Below-Knee Amputee Model that Accounts for Residuum-Socket Interaction When modeling the gait of individuals with lower limb loss who use a prosthesis, the motion and loads of the residual limb inside the socket are typically not captured and thus, cannot be included in the model. Andrew LaPre and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts @ Amherst have developed a below-knee amputee model that includes a residuum-socket joint with zero to 6 degrees of freedom (DOFs).
