Please note the IMAG MSM Population Modeling Working Group Webinar,
originally scheduled for today, has been postponed until next Wednesday
7/29 at 11:30am ET, as a result of the Presidential Honor being bestowed
upon Dr. Fallah in Liberia this week.

Outbreak response to Ebola in Liberia

https://www.imagwiki.nibib.nih.gov/webinars/outbreak-response-ebola-liberia

West Africa experienced an unprecedented and devastating Ebola outbreak in
2014/15. During the peak of the outbreak, Liberia was the most affected
country with more than 100 cases per week. In response to this devastating
outbreak, epidemiological modeling studies were conducted to better
understand and quantify the different disease transmission routes and
evaluate the effectiveness on ongoing and potentially new intervention
strategies. In this webinar, we will present a data driven stochastic model
of Ebola transmission that integrates epidemiological and clinical data on
Ebola viral load, daily infection incidence, and case fatality together
with primary data on contact mixing patterns collected from Ebola patients
in Montserrado County, Liberia. We will discuss how this novel approach to
Ebola modeling was used to investigate 1) the differential contribution of
survivors and non-survivors to Ebola transmission in Liberia, 2) temporal
variation of these contribution throughout the infectious period of
infected individuals, and 3) optimal isolation and self-quarantine
strategies for curtailing the spread of Ebola in Liberia.

In addition to the presentation of our model, Dr. Mosoka Fallah, who was
the leading Liberian epidemiologist during the Ebola outbreak, will present
on the community-based initiative he developed and oversaw. He will
describe the strategies used for involving community members and
peer-nominated supervisors to both increase general awareness about Ebola
and provide for rapid identification of new cases. His grassroots-based
framework will further be discussed in terms of post-Ebola Liberia's
surveillance of infectious diseases.
