NCSRR Visiting Scholars Selected and Upcoming Webinar

*Congratulations to the 2014 NCSRR Visiting Scholars* The NCSRR will host its third Visiting Scholars Program this summer. We selected two exceptional candidates from a large and highly competitive pool of applicants based on their outstanding scientific potential, strong computational skills, and past contributions in modeling and simulation. The 2014 Scholars include James Buffi from Northwestern University and Jason Moore from Cleveland State University. Wouter will work on including a contact model between the stump and prosthesis and use these forces during the simulation in order to assist in prosthetic fitting and tuning of transtibial amputees. Working with NASA, Fregly and Kim used the OpenSim software to predict simple ways that astronauts could modify the standard squat exercise to be more effective at maintaining muscle mass on the International Space Station. They will be going on to compete in the Florida State Science Fair in April and in the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May. *Read more here <http://www.gainesville.com/article/20140211/ARTICLES/140219919>.* Oregon State University undergraduate Jade Montgomery won two awards from the College of Engineering for her research work conducted with Ravi Balasubramanian. Jade used OpenSim to study how effective implanted engineering mechanisms are in tendon-transfer surgery. NCSRR/OpenSim Visiting Scholars Program: Call for Applications

The National Center for Simulation in Rehabilitation Research (NCSRR) is now accepting applications for the 2014 Visiting Scholars Program. The program is a unique experience that fosters expertise and collaborations in biomechanical simulations for rehabilitation research. Professor Scott Delp is the Director of this Center. Up to four individuals will be chosen to visit the NCSRR at Stanford University for a 5-week period from July 14, 2014 to August 15, 2014. Each visiting scholar will receive an $8,000 stipend. During their visits, awardees will receive training and mentoring to help them reach their research goals. They will have the opportunity to participate in formal meetings, discussions with OpenSim experts, and brainstorming sessions with their fellow visiting scholars to advance their research and the OpenSim project. The Visiting Scholars Program is intended for faculty members and postdoctoral fellows with exceptional skills in biomechanics, simulation, and computer science, who will advance the field of movement science through the development of new software, biomechanical models, and outstanding research. NCSRR Pilot Project Award Winners and Upcoming OpenSim Events

We are pleased to announce our Pilot Project Program Awardees for 2014. We also have news on several upcoming events and programs. *Pilot Project Awards* We got an outstanding response to our call for proposals this year. Given the high caliber of the applicant pool, we carefully reviewed the applications with the NCSRR Scientific Advisory Board. We selected two projects for Pilot Awards: - Frank Sup, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. An improved musculoskeletal model of below-knee amputees to aid in prosthetic design - Katherine Steele, University of Washington. Request for Letters of Support from the OpenSim Community

Dear OpenSim Community: We are submitting a proposal to continue support for the OpenSim project and are seeking letters of support from you, the OpenSim community, to strengthen our proposal. We have prepared a template to assist with writing these letters, and have attached it to this email. We hope to receive all letters of support by November 5. Our proposal is to create a NIH National Center for Mobility Data Integration and Insight (Mobilize) whose driving biomedical aim is to improve and motivate mobility for individuals who have neurological and musculoskeletal disorders or injuries. The proposal is in response to the NIH's Big Data to Knowledge RFA. The Mobilize Center will create open source tools for automatically integrating motion data, of all types and levels of fidelity, into a centralized database. The center will then utilize this database by developing and applying tools that combine physics- and physiology-based modeling with data mining to test hypotheses, diagnose gait pathology, and predict the outcome of interventions. We are targeting a broad range of disorders and injuries, including cerebral palsy, osteoarthritis, running injuries, obesity, fall risk, stroke, and many others. It would be a great help to our proposal to have testimonial letters from you, stating how you currently use OpenSim and indicating your willingness to contribute your experimental data, models and simulations to the knowledgebase we plan to establish. The letters could also explain the impact you think the Mobilize Center would have on our field. A diversity of letters from around the world will help our effort. Attached is a template you may find useful for writing the letter. We would be grateful if you could send a signed letter (preferably as a PDF file on your own letterhead) to opensim(a)stanford.edu by November 5.
